Background
Since 2014, UNESCO Amman Office has been implementing the “Support to Media in Jordan” project, funded by the European Union, in close collaboration with the Ministry of State for Media Affairs and the media community in Jordan. The project initially built on a media Strategy adopted by the government of Jordan in 2011, and the related Action Plan. The Support to Media in Jordan project aims to help Jordan’s efforts in advancing the Jordanian media to further increase its freedom, independence and professionalism. During the first phase of the project, UNESCO developed a comprehensive study of the Jordanian media landscape on the basis of UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators (MDI). In the second phase of the project, UNESCO has been implementing activities based on the MDI report recommendations.
The project entered Phase II in November 2015 that, in addressing the findings as well as recommendations of the above-mentioned study, works on the following areas: 1) Improvement of legal framework, closer in line with international standards; 2) Entry-level journalism education; 3) Systematic quality training for media professionals; 4) Independent self-regulatory mechanism; 5) Media and Information literacy (MIL); 6) Diversity and pluralism in the media; 7) Strengthening community media.
In November 2016, an amendment to the Action was made so that the new activity is added-procurement of equipment.
The Project is implemented through several implementing partners, both national and international. UNESCO also chose to implement directly more project components than initially foreseen while maintaining active partnership relations with all implementing partners and the monitoring of the implementation.
UNESCO Office in Amman, active since more than a decade in the field of media-development in Jordan, will implement the project in close cooperation with media outlets, media professional associations, press-freedom organizations, journalism-training centers of excellence, and other national partners. It will also rely on the technical backstopping of the Communication and Information Sector at Headquarters, and on its established partnership with most of the regional/European/global media organizations and associations.
The funding for this project is provided by the European Union (EU), within the framework of an agreement signed between UNESCO and EU.
