Scope of work:
The Junior Researcher will work under the direct supervision and support of the Output 1 Manager and will assist with the analysis and reporting of research and monitoring data. S/He will take an active role in packaging, analyzing and presenting monitoring data in high-quality reports.
The Junior Researcher will report to the Team Leader. S/He will liaise daily with the Output 1 Manager and work closely with the Field Coordinator and Data Information Officer on issues related to the monthly data collection and analysis. The Junior Researcher will liaise with the Project Manager on teaming, human resources and operations matters. The position will be based Istanbul, Turkey with travel to Gaziantep, Turkey as required.
The position will be contracted from 16/10/2017 till 31/03/2018.
Terms of Reference:
A.Research, Data Collection and Management
- Conduct desk-based research on issues related to project implementation: such as emerging governance structures, cease-fires or de-escalation zones/areas, and relevant security and justice actors and structures.
- Monitor news and social media websites, review formal reports and related publications for information relevant to the AJACS programme or the atmospherics in key areas of interest.
- In support of the Output 1 Manager, liaise with the Field Coordinator and Data Information Officer to track progress of Output 1 data collection, translation and data input. Provide support to the Field Coordination and Data Management functions as needed.
B.Analysis and Reporting:
- Review, package and analyze all qualitative monitoring data. This includes identification of red-flag issues and useful quotations for use in reporting.
- Support presentation and communication of high quality reports including design of infographics, PowerPoint presentations, and appropriate use of images sourced from monitoring officers.
- Support preparation of Community Observation and Analysis tool and Field Monitoring Report annexes.
- With the supervision and support of the Output 1 Manager, support the drafting of specific sections of bi-monthly or ad hoc reports. This includes fact checking and copy editing.
C.Lessons Learned and community atmospherics
- Support detailed community-level atmospherics to ensure Field Coordination and Analytical staff have a strong understanding of local conditions in advance of monitoring visits.
- Support bi-monthly lessons learned procedures aimed at constant incremental improvement of third party monitoring tools and procedures.
- Any other tasks as requested by the Team Leader and Output 1 Manager.
Education and Experience:
The successful candidate will have:
- At least a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as International Politics, Middle East Studies or Security Studies. A Master’s degree in a relevant field is highly desirable.
- Demonstrable experience producing high quality written pieces and working with data/research tools as an intern or in an entry level position for a similar organization.
- Experience working or living in the Middle East.
Competencies and Languages:
- Arabic language skills are highly desirable, though not essential.
- Obtaining a valid residency permit in Turkey is required and the company will support in the process.
