Background
Democracy Reporting International is implementing the EU-funded project Promoting Human and Labour Rights through GSP+ in the following countries: Armenia, Bolivia, Cabo Verde, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Paraguay, Philippines and Sri Lanka.
The general objective of this EIDHR project is that civil society and social partners become effective advocates and drivers of change ensuring that EU Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) beneficiary countries meet their commitments to effectively implement core international conventions. The specific objectives are supporting and empowering civil society/social partners in monitoring the relevant conventions under the GSP+ process; and supporting the implementation and reforms necessary for scheme beneficiary countries to meet their commitments under the 15 human and labour rights conventions of GSP+.
Objective of the Assignment
DRI is currently recruiting an expert to provide inputs to an internal workshop in Colombo, Sri Lanka on how to effectively engage business on human rights, with a particular focus on the approaches, best practices (e.g. multistakeholder dialogue, etc.) in context of bi-lateral trade schemes and other international mechanisms. The main purpose of the session will be to provide the partners of the programme with new inputs, to discuss, brainstorm and identify possible strategies to improve business proactive participation in the GSP+ mechanism.
Participants are representatives of organisations implementing the programme in six countries (Bolivia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines and Sri Lanka). They are all working on human rights related issues but in different contexts, using different approaches (advocacy, research, capacity building, dialogue, etc.), focusing on different issues (civil and political rights, right to information, labour rights).
Duties and responsibilities
In consultation with DRI’s team in Berlin, the Expert will be tasked with the following deliverables:
- Prepare a presentation on how to effectively engage business on human rights, with a particular focus on the approaches, best practices (e.g. multistakeholder dialogue, etc.) in context of bi-lateral trade schemes and other international mechanisms.
- Participate in the workshop in Colombo on 20-21 November, deliver the presentation on the agreed topic, providing inputs, guiding the discussion and the working groups. DRI expects the expert to lead an approximately 3-hours session of the workshop, creating an interactive and engaging environment.
- Prepare a package of reference materials for distribution to beneficiaries before the date, in preparation to the workshop.
Location and duration of the assignment
- Preparation of the workshop – Home based, 2 days
- Mission to Colombo, Sri Lanka to contribute to the workshop – Field work, 2 days
Qualifications
- Degree in law, political science, social and sociological sciences, psychology, and other related fields, with a focus on human rights and/or democracy;
- Demonstrated background in business and human rights;
- Knowledge of the fundamental UN and ILO conventions;
- Previous experiences in conducting interactive trainings/workshops;
- Fluency in spoken English;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Cultural and gender sensitivity;
- Flexibility in working hours and ability to travel.
Expert attributes
- The ability to manage time while providing an interactive and flexible learning environment;
- A proven track record in communications including public speaking and presentation.
Remuneration Package
Remuneration will depend on qualifications and experience, with a maximum rate of 500 EUR per field-day, and a maximum rate of 400 EUR per home-based day. During the mission, DRI will cover all the travel costs for the expert, including flights, visa, accommodation, meals, local transports. If applicable, per diem for the travelling days will be paid.
