Overview of the functions of the position
In February 2019, UNESCO and the European Union signed the project “Reviving Mosul and Basra Old Cities”, recognizing the power of culture as a driver of social and economic development. This project aims to support urban recovery and reconstruction through a participatory approach to skills development and job creation to foster social cohesion and community reconciliation through restoration and critical reconstruction of Mosul’s historic urban landscape and urban conservation in Basra.
Under the overall authority of the Director of the Office, and the direct supervision of the Culture Programme Specialist, the Associate Project Officer shall contribute to the implementation of the project “Reviving Mosul and Basra Old Cities” and activities addressing short and mid-term needs in terms of protection, conservation and rehabilitation of Old Cities of Mosul and Basra. This includes the following functions, but not limited to:
- Contribute to the establishment, management and monitoring of contracts and relationships with multiple implementing partners covering the range of expertise required to successfully implement the project “Reviving Mosul and Basra Old Cities” in compliance with the rules and regulations of UNESCO;
- Assist the Project Officer to plan and coordinate all activities relating to the implementation of the project “Reviving Mosul and Basra Old Cities” according to the established work plan;
- Undertake missions to Mosul and Basra or elsewhere in Iraq as necessary and requested for the project implementation;
- Assist the Project Officer in organizing stakeholder meetings and capacity-building workshops in Mosul and Basra;
- Contribute to the organization of events to enhance awareness raising and project visibility both inside and outside Iraq;
- Liaise and facilitate consultation between the relevant government authorities in Mosul, Basra and Baghdad, NGOs, suppliers and local community stakeholders as required and necessary;
- Facilitate information sharing amongst stakeholders of the project “Reviving Mosul and Basra Old Cities” in the course of project implementation and reporting by contributing to the meetings of the steering committee and stakeholders, as well as through UNESCO publications.

Required qualifications
Education
- Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in cultural studies, architecture, architectural conservation, heritage conservation and management, engineering, social or human sciences, international relations or development, or a related field.
Work Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in heritage or related fields;
- Relevant experience acquired at international level and/or in post-conflict / post disaster contexts;
- Experience working on culture project.

UNESCO’s salaries are calculated in US dollars. They consist of a basic salary and a post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, as well as exchange rates.
