Background:

Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. Democracy Reporting International promotes political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies and the development of democratic institutions world-wide.

DRI is operating in Sri Lanka since 2016 and has implemented various democratic strengthening projects with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office, the European Union, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). DRI has worked on the thematic areas of human rights, constitutions, and democratic discourse with a focus on strengthening civil society in their work towards democratic reforms.

DRI is currently recruiting a full-time Social Media Analyst for its Country Office in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In collaboration with, and under supervision of the Director of Programmes, you will conduct social media monitoring, to unveil disinformation, hate speech and other phenomena spread on social media, especially in the context of Sri Lanka’s upcoming elections and around major ongoing political reform projects in the country.

Your duties and responsibilities:

  • Assess, together with DRI’s HQ Social Media Coordinator and DRI’s Sri Lanka Country Office staff the feasibility of the research regarding data access and social media platforms in Sri Lanka and adjust the research plan accordingly;
  • Prepare, code, and monitor the scraping of relevant data during the monitoring period, ensuring data reliability and retention, in close coordination with the coders embedded in DRI’s national partner organisations;
  • Develop the classification and coding system of data for relevant research questions and prepare an efficient system for hand-annotation of data;
  • Co-facilitate capacity building workshops for the coders, in cooperation with HQ’s Social Media Coordinator;
  • Analyse data and produce visualizations to communicate insights and findings, as well as advise on the design and presentation of reporting;
  • Provide input into written reports and collaborate with programme experts to verify the correct depiction of monitoring findings;
  • Other relevant duties, as required.

Qualifications we require:

  • University degree in IT/ICT or other relevant fields;
  • At least 2 years of experience in social media monitoring using open source or private social listening tools;
  • Demonstrated expertise in a programming language or other tools for data analysis and data visualization (such as R, Python, or Tableau);
  • Knowledge of the (social) media landscape and pages of political/social/religious influencers in Sri Lanka;
  • Demonstrated experience of building the capacity of civil society or other actors on ICT topics;
  • Relevant publications on the influence of social media in politics will be considered an asset;
  • Relevant professional experience in political analysis of democratic reforms including around elections or post war transitional processes will be considered an asset;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Sinhala and/or Tamil;
