Baroness Helena Kennedy QC is seeking an experienced Human Rights Programme Lawyer to join her team at the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute. As a member of a qualified, diverse team, the IBAHRI Programme Lawyer will be responsible for the development of human rights programmes, focusing primarily on programmes regarding the rule of law and human rights, the independence of the legal profession and the right to protest.
The International Bar Association (IBA) is a global federation of lawyers, Law Societies and Bar Associations, which works to influence the development of international law reform and shape the future of the legal profession. With a membership of more than 190 bar associations and law societies and over 80,000 individual lawyers, the organisation covers all continents. The IBA’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) was established in 1995 and works across the association, and works through the legal profession, helping to promote, protect and enforce human rights under a just rule of law, and to preserve the independence of the judiciary and legal profession worldwide.
The IBAHRI works by sending fact-finding missions worldwide leading to long-term technical assistance programmes in partnership with Bar Associations and Law Societies; sending trial observers; supporting amicus briefs; intervening by making representations to domestic and international authorities worldwide; organising human rights training for lawyers and judges; liaising closely with international and regional human rights organisations, and producing newsletters and other publications.
The Role:
• Managing and implementing appropriate projects including, but not limited to, the IBAHRI’s work on the rule of law and human rights, the independence of the legal profession and the right to protest, including conceiving, developing, communicating and delivering the work;
• Designing and implementing activities including but not limited to, fact-finding missions, trial observations, tailor-made training programmes for stakeholders, including lawyers, judges and prosecutors, delivery of training, technical advice, international and national advocacy;
• Developing and maintaining relations with donors, draft project proposals and secure funding for each project in liaison with the IBAHRI Development coordinator;
• Undertaking, managing and commissioning relevant legal research, including research commissioned by external experts;
• Managing and drafting reports and documents for a variety of stakeholders;
• Managing budgets and monitoring expenditure within agreed budget limits; overseeing grant administration for each project and reporting to donors;
• Developing monitoring and evaluating activities for projects;
• Liaising with relevant IGOs and NGOs and other stakeholders;
• Managing the involvement of IBA members and other legal experts, including external consultants, in the delivery of IBAHRI projects;
• Drafting press releases, reports, briefings and articles to promote HRI’s objectives and specific projects including drafting posts and articles for IBAHRI’s social media and website ;
• Representing IBAHRI in the field and internationally to governments, judicial and legal communities, IGOs, NGOs, media and donors, including at a senior level, to enhance impact of HRI programmes;
• Representing IBAHRI at specialised conferences and forums.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
• Post-graduate qualification in law; preferably in international human rights law/ international law/ international humanitarian law;
• At least six years of practical legal experience, with field experience managing human rights/ rule of law projects and delivering capacity building/ training programmes;
• Experience in application of international human rights law / international humanitarian law; field experience working on rule of law projects preferred;
• Experience in undertaking, managing and commissioning relevant legal research and drafting reports and documents for a variety of stakeholders;
• Experience in project management, fundraising, report writing and project administration;
• Strong analytical and writing skills, including the ability to write concisely and under pressure;
• Confident communication skills and emotionally intelligent;
• Demonstrated flexibility and versatility, able to contribute to and work well in a team;
• Demonstrated innovative approaches and ability to multi-task;
• Strong team player, experienced in influencing and collaborating with others to deliver objectives;
• Fluent written and spoken English;
• Proficiency in Russian desirable;
• Proficiency in other languages desirable;
• Willingness to travel.
The position will be located at the IBA’s London office, and will involve
frequent overseas travel.
