How the VP/D fits into the Integrity Team
VP/D will be a senior management role at Integrity. The position sits within our Services Team, which leads the design and delivery of our work, and will report directly to the Chief Performance Officer. VP/D will provide internal and external leadership on the delivery of our contracted international portfolio. You will work closely with our Technical Heads, Project Directors and Project Managers to design and deliver a high quality, commercially sound portfolio. You will also be a key member of Integrity’s senior leadership, particularly in the Services team.
Delivery of projects across our portfolio is context dependent and varies significantly in complexity and content. Our delivery approach aims to integrate leading expertise with a strong understanding and empathy with our clients and the delivery contexts they face. Whilst we deliver our full range of services through our projects, the current portfolio is particularly focused on Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning; Research, Evidence & Analysis; and Data & Knowledge Management. We design and manage adaptive projects through effective feedback loops from beneficiaries, clients, teams and other key stakeholders. To perform effectively in a range of contexts, we carefully balance the technical, commercial, operational and people elements of delivery.
The role is based in the UK. You will work closely with the Heads of Services and Thematics, the project management cadre and the wider Services team. You will also work closely with the Business, Operations and Corporate teams across the project cycle.
Scope of Work
VP/D’s role is focused on driving quality, efficiency, consistency and profitability across our contracted portfolio. This will include significant client, team and resource management. You will operate comfortably in complex, uncertain and fast-moving contexts and be able to design and execute solutions sensitively and at pace.
VP/D will oversee, manage and report on a growing 15+ project portfolio that includes several prime, multi-year projects across the world. You will be responsible for overseeing the continued refinement and roll-out of our project management strategy, working closely with the PM Working Group. This strategy aims to both refine our external PM offer as well as continuing to develop our internal PM systems and processes to meet both client and internal requirements. VP/D will work closely with the project management cadre across the directorate.
VP/D will also play a major role in the delivery of contracted projects, including Project Director positions on high profile assignments. You will have proven technical, leadership and management expertise, including the ability to liaise effectively and sensitively with senior stakeholders, team members and colleagues at all levels.
The VP/D role also includes responsibilities in company strategy and management, team management, business development, account management and wider institutional learning. The VP/D will work flexibly across Integrity’s different services and teams and be attracted to a fast-paced working environment.
This is an external-facing role and you will engage with a range of clients, partners and stakeholders on Integrity’s portfolio and capabilities. This includes representing Integrity and promoting our work at key events and conferences.
Terms of Reference
A. Portfolio Management and Delivery (60%)
You will:
· Manage a high quality, profitable and coherent portfolio (UK office), reporting to the CPO and Executive Management Committee.
· Act as escalation point for Project Directors and clients on portfolio risks and issues, working with them to develop appropriate solutions.
· Ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, to high levels of quality and in keeping with Integrity’s ethics and ethos.
· Negotiate successful proposals to contract ensuring effective coordination with relevant parties across Integrity’s four directorates.
· Work closely with other Integrity teams (Business, Operations, Corporate) to ensure alignment and efficiencies between delivery and the wider organisation.
· Sponsor select contracted projects in governance and/or management capacities as Project Director and/or as a member of the project governance board.
· Lead on project responses to strategic risks and opportunities.
· Effectively, empathetically and diligently manage relationships with clients, consortium partners and stakeholders more broadly.
· In line with the Company Strategy (2017 – 2022), continue the roll out of the agreed PM Strategy and Plan, including leading the PM Working Group.
· Continue to drive improvements in PM processes and tools across the portfolio and provide internal leadership to the project management cadre on these (note over time we will fill a Head of Project Management role sitting at the grade below VP/Delivery).
B. Company Management (10%)
You will:
· Represent Services in resource management discussions, driving effective decision-making that efficiently and sensitively aligns resources with priorities.
· Eligible to sit on the Executive Management Committee and Company Committees (e.g., Risk, Resource, HR), on invitation.
C. Team Management (10%)
You will:
· Line manage select Integrity staff and/or corporate consultants at grade levels below S1.
· Mentor and support colleagues.
· Work with colleagues under line management to develop their careers, contributing to professional advancement, job satisfaction and personnel retention.
· Work with colleagues not under line management to support their professional development in areas of specific expertise or companies, including supporting the development of in-house training materials and delivery of training.
D. Business Development & Account Management (15%)
You will:
· Develop and sustain strong working relationships with key government clients and other relevant accounts.
· Sponsor select high priority or top target bids.
· Work with the Integrity team to provide constructive quality assurance of technical and commercial offers on selected opportunities.
E. Thought Leadership and Learning (5%)
You will:
· Enhance Integrity’s delivery approaches – working closely with other colleagues - with a view to promoting innovative practices and positioning the organisation as a practice/thought leader.
· Share knowledge gained through project delivery and wider experiences with the internal team, including informal training/coaching.
· Participate in external technical events, fora and relevant communities of practice.
Your Experience and Expertise
The successful VP/D candidate will have:
· 15+ years’ experience working within the international development and/or the consultancy sector.
· Proven expertise in the design and delivery of complex multi-year programmes and projects (>£10m value), including workflow planning and management, budget management, contract management and risk management, and including Project Director roles.
· Strong people skills evidenced by client, team and staff management experience.
· Experience of developing and running effective and efficient PM systems, processes and tools to support high quality, profitable delivery.
· Substantial senior management experience, including strategy and operations, and high commercial awareness.
· Intermediate level MS Excel (minimum).
· Written and oral fluency in English, with excellent communication skills.
It is desirable that VP/D will also:
· Have experience in some or all of the following thematics: fragility and violent conflict; climate, natural resources and environment; health; gender and social inclusion; humanitarian assistance; economic development; and governance.
· Have experience working in the international development sector / FCAS environments.
· Have extensive experience working at a senior consulting level to the UK and / or the US government, IFIs like the World Bank, Foundations or large private sector organisations.
· Have experience of implementing projects.
· Be an intermediate/advanced user of relevant project management software, including ability to build systems.
· Proven ability to see the wider strategic picture in a practical context.
· Have experience managing multi-project portfolios for diverse clients, including projects relating to Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning; Research; Data and Knowledge Management and wider Digital/Technology.
Languages:
· Written and oral fluency in English, with the ability to write clear and compelling narrative.
· Speak French or Arabic to a working proficiency.
