Overview of the functions of the post **

Under the overall authority and direct supervision of the Head of Office in Amman, the incumbent will be responsible for the implementation of the project "Jordanian and Syrian Youth for Heritage Conservation and Risk Prevention in Petra", whose overall goal is to enhance the capacities of and provide employment opportunities to Jordanian and Syrian youth on cultural heritage preservation and risk prevention by contributing to the implementation of priority landslide risk mitigation works in Petra, with primary focus on reducing land slide risks in the 'Siq'. The position will be also responsible for the implementation of the activities under the Culture Sector regular programme related to the conservation and management of Tangible Cultural Heritage in Jordan and other areas, as required.

The incumbent will carry out the following tasks:

  1. Manage the overall implementation and coordination of the project "Jordanian and Syrian Youth for Heritage Conservation and Risk Prevention in Petra", and ensure the achievement of the planned expected results, by:

· Preparing project work-plans, including for the procurement of goods and services;

· Preparing contracts and identifying suitable providers, contractors or consultants for the implementation of the activities;

· Supervising and coordinating the activities of the project staff as well as consultants and service providers hired in the framework of the project;

· Maintaining regular contact with the representatives of relevant Government authorities and with representatives of the donor;

· Coordinating technical and steering committee meetings and maintaining relationships with relevant stakeholders.

  1. Ensure the monitoring and evaluation of project implementation and the reporting on project activities by:

· Conducting periodic reviews of the project with government counterparts and the donor as well as preparing analytical periodic reports, briefings and other documents to be shared with the relevant Government authorities and the donor;

· Ensuring regular follow–ups on the implementation of contracts, providing technical input and review, assessing the quality of services provided, and requesting disbursement of funds;

· Monitoring project activities and suggesting updates of the project log frames;

· Regularly monitoring the financial status of the project and prepare budget revisions as necessary;

· Regularly conducting meetings of the project steering and technical committees.

  1. Support the implementation of the World Heritage Convention through the execution of the Regular Programme funds for the conservation and management of Tangible Cultural Heritage and Tentative List sites in Jordan.

  2. Liaise closely with relevant stakeholders and participate in coordination meetings with other UN agencies and UNESCO World Heritage Centre to strengthen project outputs and build synergies with other UNESCO programmes and activities.

  3. Supervise the activities of the project staff, project contractors and consultants.

  4. Contribute to the design and preparation of new projects/programmes related to cultural heritage in Jordan, with specific reference to projects addressing heritage conservation and management, culture and development.

  6. Required qualifications

    Education

    · Advanced University degree (Master or equivalent) in a field related to cultural heritage, as architecture, archaeology, heritage conservation and management, or a related field of specialty.

    Work Experience

    · A minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible relevant work experience of which at least 2 years acquired at international level;

    · Proven experience in designing and implementing cultural heritage projects and programmes.

    Skills and competencies

    · Strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills;

    · Excellent interpersonal skills;

    · High proficiency in writing;

    · Ability to build partnerships, maintain and enhance working relations with ministries, as well as institutions and relevant intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations;

    · Excellent project implementation skills;

    · Supervisory and managerial skills, capable of leading a team of professionals;

    · Capable of making technically sound decisions on all aspects of project implementation;

    · Good knowledge of standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, etc.).

    Languages

    · Excellent knowledge of the English language.

    Languages

    · Knowledge of Arabic is highly desired.

UNESCO’s salaries are calculated in US dollars. They consist of a basic salary and a post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, as well as exchange rates.
