Overview of the functions of the position
The UNESCO Amman Office is implementing the projects entitled "Jordanian and Syrian Youth for Heritage Conservation and Risk Prevention in Petra" and "Employment Opportunities for Cultural Heritage Safeguarding in Jordan".
The first project aims to further contribute to the management and conservation of the 'Siq' of Petra through an integrated and long-term sustainable approach. Specifically, the project has per objectives 1) the enhancement of the capacities of and provision of employment opportunities to Jordanian and Syrian youth on cultural heritage preservation and risk prevention, 2) the implementation of priority landslide risk mitigation works in Petra, with primary focus on reducing land slide risks in the 'Siq'.
The second project aims to invest in cultural heritage preservation while creating short term job opportunities for Jordanians and Syrians as a contribution to sustainable socio-economic development and by utilizing culture as a source of resilience. The project objective will be achieved through: a) basic rehabilitation and conservation of two cultural heritage sites (in the Mafraq and Maan Governorates) for heritage safeguarding and tourism purposes; b) short term employment generation for Syrian refugees and Jordanians living in host communities. Both projects have a considerable component of field implementation which requires the related field management skills.
Under the overall authority of the Head of the UNESCO Amman Office, and the direct supervision of the Project Officers responsible for the activities of the project “Jordanian and Syrian Youth for Heritage Conservation and Risk Prevention in Petra” and the project "Employment Opportunities for Cultural Heritage Safeguarding in Jordan", the incumbent will undertake the following duties and responsibilities:
‐ Assist the project officers of the respective projects in the implementation and monitoring of the field activities geared towards employment generation of Syrians and Jordanians;
‐ More specifically, for the project "Jordanian and Syrian Youth for Heritage Conservation and Risk Prevention in Petra":
a) Assist in coordinating the field implementation of priority landslide risk mitigation works in Petra, in coordination with the supervisor and the Junior Professional Officer assigned on the project;
b) Liaise with the contractors in charge of employing Jordanian and Syrian youth to support the implementation of the landslide risk mitigation works in Petra;
c) Assist in organizing appointments, meetings, activities and missions, as needed;
d) Support the administrative assistant of the project in drafting contracts, as needed;
e) Liaise with the contractors, the local authorities and the local community during the implementation of the field activities.
‐ More specifically, for the project "Employment Opportunities for Cultural Heritage Safeguarding in Jordan":
a) Be responsible for the management of data related to Syrians and Jordanians employed as part of the project, in line with the guidelines provided by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ); UNESCO is committed to promoting gender equality within its Secretariat. b) Assist in coordinating the field implementation of heritage rehabilitation interventions in Petra, in coordination with the supervisor;
c) Liaise with the contractors in charge of employing Jordanian and Syrian youth to support heritage rehabilitation interventions in Petra and Rihab;
d) Assist in the financial aspects of the activities by preparing documents for processing payments related to the projects’ activities and office maintenance;
e) Follow up with the Administrative and Financial Platform on issues related to the payments and other administrative tasks;
f) Prepare travel arrangements for external consultants and UNESCO experts including flight and hotel bookings, transportation, visa, travel authorization and any other requirements as needed;
g) Assist in drafting contracts and administrative documents as needed; h) Assist in organizing appointments, meetings, activities and missions;
i) Prepare minutes and official correspondence in good English language, as needed;
j) Assist in organizing and coordinating the logistics of workshops, seminars, field visits, and meetings related to the project and attend as needed.
k) Print, scan, and photocopy all documents required when needed.
l) Provide support in the visibility activities of the project in close coordination with the supervisor.
